City of Barrie Names Street After Former Colts Head Coach

The City of Barrie announced the naming of a street to Dale Hawerchuk Way. The decision was made to honour former Colts head coach (2010-2019) Dale Hawerchuk for his years of service. Additionally, Mayor Jeff Lehman revealed the newly named street sign to Hawerchuk, Colts Owner & President Howie Campbell, and Hawerchuk’s family.

“Dale defined the spirit of hockey. He gave so much to the game and so much to our community. Dale brought so much joy to so many hockey fans and so much to the City of Barrie. I am honored to be able to announce that Dale Hawerchuk Way will forever be a part of the City of Barrie.”

Equally important, Hawerchuk, 58, was drafted first overall in the 1981 National Hockey League draft. Hawerchuk scored 518 goals and racked up 1409 points during his illustrious 1188-game career, winning the Calder Trophy in his rookie season. Furthermore, Hawerchuk was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.

Georgian College Fitness Centre Closures

Thursday, Georgian College announced Fitness & Athletic Centre closures. The closures impact the Barrie and Owen Sound campuses. The cautionary decision is due to the rising COVID-19 cases in the area. Also, the Orillia campus Fitness Centre will remain closed for the year.

Details for re-opening in the New Year will be announced in the coming weeks.

Barrie Colts Have Games Postponed

The Colts announced further cancellations this week due to the rising case numbers.
