Barrie native Alex Massie wins a silver medal in snowboarding

Local Paralympic snowboarder Alex Massie took home a silver medal at last Friday’s inaugural World Para-Snow Sports Championships in Lillehammer, Norway. The Barrie native made his city proud, capping off a six-podium performance for Team Canada at the para-sports games.

Massie made his Paralympic Winter Games debut back in 2018. Unfortunately, a wakeboarding accident sustained in 2011 resulted in Massie losing his left leg below the knee, altering his career plans. Additionally, Massie won gold in snowboarding at the Alberta Provincials. Then again at the Canadian Para-Snowboard Championships.

Massie has remained a top-five competitor in the para-snowboard circuit, earning bronze medals at the 2015 World Championships and X Games. Massie followed up with two more bronze finishes at the 2016 IPC Snowboard World Cup event in Trentino, Italy.

Barrie Colts kick off weekend homestand

The Colts open the weekend with back-to-back home games at Sadlon Arena, welcoming back the North Bay Battalion Saturday afternoon and the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday evening. Additionally, the Colts look to get back into the win column after dropping Thursday’s contest against the Owen Sound Attack 3-2.

Despite the loss, there are still plenty of smiles in Colts County. The team hopes to get #BackInTheSaddle with a couple of W’s this chilly weekend.

Also, earlier in the week against the Sudbury Wolves, the Colts picked up an emphatic 4-1 victory. Goaltender Mack Guzda stood tall, making 31 saves in his 150th career OHL game. Furthermore, offensive defenseman Beau Akey scored his first career OHL goal!

Finally, the team announced a statement regarding updated Ontario Government regulations for attendance at future Colts games. With the ongoing pandemic and its restrictions still in effect, the Colts appreciate the patience from their fans as they navigate through these trying times.
