Barrie Colts Split Weekend Games

While the world may still be restricted, the Colts continue chugging along. First, the Colts welcomed North Bay Battalion to Sadlon Arena on Saturday night, falling short in overtime 3-2. Hunter Haight and Cooper Matthews (on the power play) produced the Colts’ scoring tallies. Matteo Lalama made 21 saves in a losing effort.

On the flip side, a trip to Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound delivered far better results, as the Colts trounced the Owen Sound Attack 7-3. Also, the Colts erupted for three goals in the first period and never relented, cruising to victory.

Additionally, top prospect Declan McDonnell, recently acquired by the Colts, scored in his debut. McDonnell has 11 goals and 24 points through 28 games this season. Furthermore, McDonnell is a 2020 7th round draft pick by the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning.

What’s more, Nathan Allensen played in his 200th career OHL game, opening the scoring for the Colts with his seventh tally of the season. Lalama rebounded in goal, making 22 saves to earn the victory.

Colts Trades

It was an eventful week for roster transactions. First, the Colts shockingly dealt leading scorer Oskar Olausson to the Oshawa Generals for a haul of draft picks, along with winger Kevin Niedenz.

Olausson contributed a team-leading 12 goals and 25 points in 22 games this season for the Colts. This season is likely Olausson’s last in juniors. The scoring Swede is NHL-bound, drafted 28th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2021 Entry Draft.

Next, the Colts parted with Sault Ste. Marie product Nick Porco, trading him to the Owen Sound Attack for 2022 5th round draft pick, along with a 12th round selection in 2023.

Finally, Declan McDonnell was reeled in along with two draft picks in exchange for the rights to Hunter Brzustewicz and conditional picks. Furthermore, the maneuvers concluded a busy week of trade deadline dealings for Barrie Colts General Manager Marty Williamson.

Upcoming Schedule

Additionally, the Colts press forward with three more matchups this week. The team travels to Meridian Centre to face the Niagara IceDogs on Thursday, January 13, before splitting weekend games with the Battalion Saturday, January 15, and Sunday afternoon, on January 16.
