TGIF: Star Sighting

Let’s be honest…there are worse ways to kickstart the weekend than with a cold beverage.

And yet, it’s easy to fall into a routine of buying the same couple of beers or spirits at your favorite watering hole or the LCBO. Of course, there’s always going to be your standard go-to’s. But mixing it up (get it…mixing???) makes for a fun outing.

With that in mind, we’re taking a shot (bet you thought we would stop with the drinking puns after that first one) at finding you a weekly selection of spirits to liven up your Friday.

This week why don’t your try…

The initial pour is a rich amber color, yielding to a head two fingers high. The head establishes pale white in color, with a long-lasting fluffiness. Thick lacing remains after the drink settles.

As for the first taste, expect a spicier bend, with a subtle undercurrents of citrus. Aside from orange, pine, grass, ginger, and tangerine, toffee and caramel tend to stand out, after the beer warms. This beer actually isn’t obviously alcoholic on the first swill through the taste buds, although it does become fairly sweet as it opens up.

Beyond that first taste, the malt character is strong, as expected from a monster IPA. The first few smells reveal caramel and toffee, growing from hints at the beginning, to the dominate strain throughout, with flourishes of ginger and leather to finish up. The smell and taste combine for a pleasant complexity, although the flavour might be considered an acquired taste.

As the drink goes down, it is not difficult on the palate. Carbonation is on the lower side, with seemingly smaller bubbles.

To sum up, this is a very competent IPA, with alot of strengths in all the prime areas. Best paired with traditional pub fare on the stodgy side (chips, burgers, steak pies) to offset the sweet and spicy amalgamation.

ABV 10.2% | IBUs 34 | SRM 4
Malts: Pale Malt (2 Row), Wheat Malt, Oat Flakes
Hops: Simcoe Idaho-7, Three Dry Hop Additions (Fermentation Days 4, 8 & 12): Simcoe, Idaho 7, Vic Secret

You can grab Sparklepuff at Flying Monkey’s and the LCBO…and probably in a galaxy far, far away.
