Barrie Uncovered requests your help with The Final Throw Down. We’re tasking you with a critical question. It’s Friday afternoon, work is almost done, and the rumbling in your stomach says, ‘Hunger pains are happening.’ You’re in the west end of Barrie, and you’ve heard there are great meals at a local restaurant. As it’s Friday, you often choose fish and chips, but you’ve heard that the burgers here are to die for. What do you prefer?
This is a juicy 6 oz. Beef patty on a fresh bun served with your choice of fries, sweet potato fries or onion rings. Lavish it with the works, or tailor it to your taste by adding bacon (of course) or cheese. You can always upgrade to a choice of salad if that makes you feel less guilty.
The Friday special of Fish and Chips is a humongous platter with hand-dipped haddock, fresh-cut fries and homemade tartar sauce. The saying in the restaurant is that ‘Some people will go to the end of the earth to find good Fish and Chips. Those in the know come to Steyn House’.
Steyn House is the place to go in the west end. If you’re a regular at the Holly Rec Centre, make it a stop for lunch with the kids after sports or even a cold brew after running with the group.
The owners, Willie and Illse, always say, ‘if you come as a stranger, you leave as family.’ The truth is that there’s always so much going on at Steyn House – you might become a fixture.
There are great daily specials, especially at lunch, to die for Sunday dinners, often with a taste of South Africa, and many evening and weekend events. Do you like Karaoke? Then Steyn House is for you. Get there early, though, to get a seat. If it’s live music you like, keep your eyes on their ‘Fun Stuff’ to see whose playing when. Finding Juke Box Hero and Golden Tee Golf to keep you busy while waiting makes everyone happy.
As for community involvement, they’re the place for that as well. Next month is the Annual Steyn House Bike Tour, with entry fee proceeds going to Mental Health. Maybe even more exciting is that patio season is almost here. With one of the largest patios in town, there will always be something happening at Steyn House, 2 Marcellus Drive in Barrie. It’s worth the drive to the west end.

It’s a hard choice as they both are soo good but if I had to pick just one I would say the burger.
